It’s TONY SEASON!!!

I’m not as excited as I was last year, mainly because there aren’t any new Latino musicals or plays on Broadway, so no nominations. But there are at least four Latino actors and one Latino playwright nominated:

Best Leading Actress in a Musical: Josefina Scaglione as Maria in West Side Story

Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Karen Olivo as Anita in West Side Story

Best Leading Actor in a Musical: David Alvarez as Billy in Billy Elliot, the Musical

Best Leading Actor in a play: Raúl Esparza in Speed the Plow

Best New Script: Moisés Kaufman for 33 Variations.

My predictions:

Best New Play: God of Carnage

Best New Musical: Billy Elliot, the Musical

Best Revival of a Play: Waiting for Godot

Best Revival of a Musical: HAIR

Conversation:

Henry Godinez, resident artistic associate at the Goodman and curator of the Goodman’s Latino Theatre Festival.
